New Paper in IPIC 2026 Proceedings: CargoBeamer’s CBoXX and Automated Nodes for LTL-on-Rail Innovations

Unit cargo (such as EU pallets, cage boxes, and standardized containers) accounts for a massive portion of European freight movement. However, Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) shipments remain overwhelmingly dominated by road transport.

Shifting small, fragmented volumes to rail has historically been hindered by systemic incompatibilities: specialized loading units, slow crane-based terminal operations, complex booking systems, and rigid schedules. To make rail a viable, scalable, and competitive option for LTL cargo, the logistics sector requires a fundamental shift toward the principles of the Physical Internet (PI).

As part of the EU-funded HOLOGISTICS project, a new research paper titled “From Digital to Physical Internet: CBoXX-enabled LTL-on-Rail Demonstrators with Automated PI Nodes and Slot-based Booking” is now officially published online in the IPIC 2026 Proceedings, following its presentation during the 12th International Physical Internet Conference in Bordeaux.

The Three Pillars of the CBoXX-Enabled System

Authored by Hans-Jürgen Weidemann (CargoBeamer AG) and presented directly to the international scientific community at IPIC, the paper introduces an industrially grounded system design that couples physical modularity, automated infrastructure, and digital logistics management:

  • The CBoXX: A Micro-PI Hub on Rail: Traditional rail solutions often suffer from poor volume utilization when transporting unstacked pallets. CargoBeamer’s newly designed CBoXX rail container addresses this by acting as a consolidation hub on wheels. Capable of holding up to 104 EU pallets (compared to 26 non-stackable pallets in a standard 40ft ISO container), the CBoXX increases volume efficiency from 20% to 70%. This enables flexible pooling of shipments from multiple shippers without requiring complex repacking.
  • GateModules: Automated PI Nodes: Terminal delays often erase the time and cost advantages of long-haul rail. HOLOGISTICS introduces GateModules—fully automated and electrified road/rail transhipment nodes. These modules allow simultaneous loading and unloading of entire trainsets, drastically reducing terminal dwell times, lowering handling energy, and enabling predictable, clock-face (“takt”) operations.
  • Digital Logistics Layer: Connecting the physical assets is a digital framework featuring slot-based booking (providing retail-like ease for reserving space for 1–10 pallets), unit-level visibility through unique IDs, and standardized event tracking from pickup to final delivery.

Real-World Demonstrator: The Kaldenkirchen-Domodossola Corridor

The research model presented at the conference moves into practical testing in 2027 with a real-world demonstrator operating along the vital freight corridor connecting Kaldenkirchen (Germany / Netherlands border) and Domodossola / Milan (Italy).

Key features of the demonstrator include:

  • Repeatable Daily Circulation: Fixed terminal windows and synchronized train schedules.
  • Zero-Emission First and Last Mile: Deploying medium-sized electric trucks (eTrucks) to handle regional pickup and delivery within defined catchment areas.
  • End-to-End KPI Measurement: Tracking full transport costs per unit, transit times, schedule adherence, and direct CO₂ emissions.

Comparative KPI evaluations in the paper confirm that coupling high-capacity CBoXX units with automated GateModules and eTrucks (Scenario F) delivers significantly lower costs and CO₂ emissions per unit cargo compared to conventional diesel road transport or standard intermodal chains.

Paving the Way for European Physical Internet Adoption

Beyond corridor-specific performance, the primary contribution of this HOLOGISTICS milestone is establishing a replicable Physical Internet blueprint. By combining standardized modular units, automated node operating procedures, transparent digital governance, and clean first/last-mile logistics, the project provides a scalable framework for decarbonizing European supply chains.
