Launching the HOLOGISTICS Educational Portal: empowering the future of green logistics through knowledge pioneering system-Level change in European freight
Freight transport sits at the core of European economic activity, supporting markets and daily goods movement, yet it remains one of the most persistent sustainability challenges on the continent. While individual technological innovations continue to advance, real world decarbonization often stalls because transport networks operate in fragmented ways – shaped by separate modes, national borders, and organizational silos.
To bridge the gap between cutting-edge research, operational practice, and policy, the HOLOGISTICS project is proud to announce the official launch of its Educational Portal, guided by the vision: Empowering the future of green logistics through knowledge”.
What is the HOLOGISTICS Educational Portal?
The Educational Portal is designed as a dedicated, open-access knowledge hub built to democratize research and foster innovation across the entire European logistics ecosystem.
It serves as an interactive space where visitors can dive deeper into:
- Research & Deep-Dive Articles: In-depth papers, expert analyses, and publications exploring system-level freight decarbonization and Physical Internet concepts.
- Project Developments & Innovations: Detailed breakdowns of the core technologies, smart assets, data platforms, and AI tools being engineered within HOLOGISTICS.
- Pilot Progress & Real-World Testing: Updates, operational insights, and field data emerging directly from our pilot demonstrators across Europe.
Who is it for?
The portal is open to everyone. Whether you are a logistics operator, supply chain practitioner, policy maker, or researcher looking for actionable industry insights-or a student, academic, logistics enthusiast, or curious reader eager to understand how European freight is evolving – this platform is your gateway to the future of smart, sustainable, and multimodal transport.
Inaugural Insights: System Thinking and Multimodal Innovation
To kick off the Educational Portal, HOLOGISTICS features two foundational deep-dive publications authored by experts from UPS and UNIMORE-ICOOR, addressing how the European freight sector can transition from localized efficiency gains toward true system-level integration.
1. Moving Beyond Fragmentation to System Design
In her publication, “From Fragmented Freight to System Thinking: The Role of HOLOGISTICS in System-Level Freight Decarbonisation,” Nicole Tuplin draws on over 18 years of linehaul network planning experience at UPS to address why progress in freight sustainability often feels incremental. She emphasizes that emissions are generated at the system level, whereas operational decisions are almost exclusively made locally within organizational boundaries.
Electrifying vehicle fleets, shifting cargo to rail, or deploying internal digital platforms improve efficiency locally, but they cannot resolve broader structural issues such as empty runs, underutilized capacity, or network-wide bottlenecks. Rather than waiting for a complete overnight overhaul of fleets or infrastructure, Tuplin argues that meaningful emission reductions require using existing capacity differently through the principles of the Physical Internet. HOLOGISTICS serves as a reference framework for this shift, connecting physical modular assets, open data-sharing ecosystems, and AI-driven synchromodal planning tools into a single, coordinated operational model.
“Decarbonisation will not come from replacing the system overnight. It will come from making the system work differently.” Nicole Tuplin (Former employee at UPS)
2. Technology Maturity and the Human-AI Balance
Grounding his work in HOLOGISTICS Deliverable 1.2, Paulo Cantillano-Lizana (Former Project Manager at ICOOR and former Research Fellow at UNIMORE) explores the current technological frontier in “Smarter, Greener, Connected: The State of the Art in Multimodal Freight Innovation.”
His research examines twelve emerging logistics innovations—ranging from multi-agent electric vehicle resource optimization to autonomous inland waterway transport-highlighting that these solutions all share a common digital substrate powered by AI, IoT sensing, digital twins, and federated data architectures. However, analyzing twenty-two previous EU-funded initiatives reveals that while individual components are technically mature, the core obstacle remains system-level integration across different operators, legal jurisdictions, and legacy IT infrastructure.
Furthermore, Cantillano-Lizana points out that successful deployment depends heavily on governance, cybersecurity, and practical human-AI collaboration. Because fully automated logistics networks face significant safety and liability hurdles, the most effective models leverage artificial intelligence to support dynamic decision-making while keeping human operators in supervisory oversigh.

The publication of these two articles marks the beginning of a growing repository dedicated to democratizing supply chain knowledge. Over the coming months, the portal will expand to feature policy briefs, interactive modules, and operational findings emerging directly from HOLOGISTICS’ real-world pilot tests across Europe.
