HOLOGISTICS visits CPR System to explore IoT-enabled pooled logistics and traceability solutions

On 13 May 2026, the HOLOGISTICS team visited the facilities of CPR System Società Cooperativa in Italy to discuss advanced pooled logistics, RFID traceability and IoT-enabled solutions for sustainable freight transport.

The meeting involved representatives from UNIMORE, ICOOR, POLIMI and CPR, including Professor Mauro Dell’Amico, Professor Ola Jabali and CPR Director General Monica Artosi.

Discussions focused on CPR’s role within the project and on the development of innovative logistics interfaces enabled by IoT technologies.

CPR’s role within HOLOGISTICS

Within HOLOGISTICS, CPR contributes to the implementation of the “Multi-agent EV Shared Resource Optimisation Platform” and the “IoT-Enabled Pooled Logistics Visibility Solutions”, supporting the distribution of fresh and temperature-controlled products.

RFID traceability and reusable packaging systems

During the visit, the consortium explored CPR’s reusable packaging and traceability system for crates and pallets used in large-scale retail logistics. The infrastructure is based on RFID technology, enabling real-time identification and tracking of logistics assets throughout the supply chain.

Circular economy and smart monitoring

Particular attention was dedicated to the project’s sustainability dimension. CPR manages a closed-loop logistics model in which damaged packaging materials are recovered, recycled and transformed into secondary raw materials, contributing to circular economy objectives.

The meeting also explored the future integration of advanced sensors for temperature monitoring, allowing logistics operators to associate thermal and location data with individual crates through RFID-enabled systems.

From operational facilities to future pilots

The consortium visited CPR’s operational facilities and observed the RFID portals currently used for automated inbound and outbound asset tracking. Operational scenarios connected to the Centro Agroalimentare di Bologna (CAAB) were also discussed as part of the broader HOLOGISTICS objective of creating interoperable, data-driven and decarbonised logistics ecosystems across Europe.

Building interoperable and zero-emission logistics networks

The visit represented an important opportunity to strengthen collaboration between research institutions, logistics operators and technology providers working together within HOLOGISTICS to accelerate the transition toward more efficient and zero-emission freight transport networks.
