HOLOGISTICS to Showcase Physical and Digital Innovations at IPIC 2026
As the world’s leading scientific event dedicated to Physical Internet research, IPIC brings together researchers, industry representatives, and policymakers working towards more sustainable, interconnected, and efficient logistics systems. Through its participation, HOLOGISTICS will showcase how the project is addressing both the physical and digital dimensions of logistics transformation across two distinct sessions.
Day 1 – Enabling Trusted Data Exchange for the Physical Internet
The first contribution, developed by UNIMORE and ICOOR, will be presented on Monday, 8 June, by Prof. Mauro Dell’Amico (UNIMORE). The research explores how DTLF-aligned data exchange mechanisms and federated governance models, including EMDS and Logistics-as-a-Service (LaaS), can contribute to the implementation of the Physical Internet.
The paper evaluates the readiness of existing frameworks to support secure, trusted, and interoperable information exchange among logistics stakeholders operating across multimodal transport networks. The findings indicate that the necessary technical foundations are already largely available. However, the study highlights that the decisive challenge lies in translating standards and governance models into practical, socio-technical, and accessible solutions that can be broadly adopted by the wide range of actors involved in European logistics and supply chains.
Session: Platforms, services and identity layers
Date & Time: Monday, 8 June 2026, 15:30 – 17:00
Room: Room 404
Day 2 – Simultaneous Power Sessions: From Innovation to Market and Synchromodality
On Tuesday, 9 June, HOLOGISTICS took center stage with a powerful, multi-room simultaneous presence that demonstrated the extensive scope of the project. From 11:00 to 12:30, the consortium engaged audience members across two parallel sessions.
In Room 406, the project hosted the flagship HOLOGISTICS Common Session within the Physical Internet Projects: From Innovation to Market framework. Prof. Mauro Dell’Amico (UNIMORE) opened this major session with a comprehensive overview of the project’s holistic approach. Following the presentation of the general ecosystem, core industrial partners pitched their breakthrough physical assets and zero-emission solutions. Kasper van der El (Damen) introduced Zero-Emission Automated Vessel Services and the Vessel IoT Digital Twin Integrator, addressing automated perception and fleet routing along inland waterways. David Feldmann (Mubea) presented the Smart Box Interoperable Inlay Container for last-mile eCargobikes, optimizing end-to-end urban delivery workflows. Inside this same room, the audience also received an overview of CargoBeamer‘s next-generation modular freight solutions.

- Room: Room 406
At the exact same time, in Room 508, the attention turned to a deep-dive technical and academic presentation focused entirely on advancing rail freight through innovative physical assets. Hans-Jürgen Weidemann pitched the project’s technical paper by CargoBeamer, focusing on the system design behind the CBoXX Rail LTL Interoperability Unit.
Designed to increase the efficiency and flexibility of rail freight transport, the CBoXX is a modular rail container capable of carrying up to 104 European pallets, significantly outperforming the capacity of a standard ISO container. The solution combines high-capacity loading with CargoBeamer’s automated GateModule railcar loading technology and IoT-enabled tracking capabilities, supporting greater visibility and interoperability across logistics operations. The paper also outlined the real-world daily demonstrator planned for the Kaldenkirchen–Domodossola corridor in 2027, where the concept will be validated under operational conditions.

Multi-Actor Green Innovations
The session will also feature key project innovations from core HOLOGISTICS partners:
- David Feldmann (Mubea) will present the Smart Box Interoperable Inlay Container for last-mile eCargobikes, optimizing end-to-end urban delivery workflows.
- Kasper van der El (Damen) will introduce Zero-Emission Automated Vessel Services and the Vessel IoT Digital Twin Integrator, addressing automated perception and fleet routing along inland waterways.

From Physical Infrastructure to Digital Governance
Together, these contributions reflect the comprehensive and cross-sectoral approach of HOLOGISTICS. While the academic research on Day 1 addresses the governance and interoperability frameworks needed to enable seamless data exchange, the practical session on Day 2 focuses on innovative physical assets and zero-emission vehicles capable of improving multimodal transport efficiency.
By combining advances in physical assets with trusted digital solutions, HOLOGISTICS is helping pave the way towards a more connected, resilient, and sustainable freight transport system in Europe.
The HOLOGISTICS consortium looks forward to sharing its latest results with the international Physical Internet community in Bordeaux and contributing to the discussion on the future of multimodal logistics and freight transport.
