HOLOGISTICS takes part in the TRA 2026 Physical Internet cross-fertilisation workshop
On 11 May 2026, the HOLOGISTICS project joined the online workshop TRA 2026: Physical Internet neighbourhood cross-fertilisation workshop, organised by the ALICE network as part of the preparations for the ALICE Logistics Innovation Village at the upcoming Transport Research Arena 2026 (TRA 2026).
The workshop brought together representatives from several European research and innovation projects working on the future of sustainable and connected freight transport, including HOLOGISTICS, IKIGAI, PILOTS, BRIDGE and SARIL.
Facilitated by Yuliya Sahitava from ALICE, the session aimed to strengthen collaboration between projects participating in the Physical Internet neighbourhood and to coordinate a coherent presence at the TRA 2026 exhibition area.
The meeting focused on both organisational aspects and project-level exchanges. Participants discussed the structure and operation of the ALICE stand, which will host a collaborative and interactive space dedicated to innovative logistics and transport solutions developed within EU-funded projects.
The ALICE booth will be organised around three main areas: a central networking and reception space, the ALICE Logistics Innovation Theatre for presentations and thematic exchanges, and several thematic project neighbourhoods. Within the Physical Internet neighbourhood, HOLOGISTICS and the other participating projects will jointly showcase their activities, technologies and pilot solutions to visitors throughout the conference.
Several practical topics related to the exhibition were addressed during the workshop, including display panels, digital materials, presentation and video content, visitor engagement strategies, stand coordination and project scheduling.
The second part of the workshop was dedicated to project presentations, allowing all participating teams to better understand each other’s objectives, innovations and expected impacts ahead of TRA 2026, while also facilitating interaction among the industry experts involved in the projects.
HOLOGISTICS: accelerating zero-emission and interoperable freight transport
During the workshop, HOLOGISTICS was presented by Gloria Giammei (UNIMORE).
The project introduced its vision for a more sustainable, efficient and resilient European logistics ecosystem through the development and demonstration of 12 interoperable innovations combining physical, digital and governance solutions. These include smart containers, zero-emission transport systems, AI-powered logistics optimisation tools, synchromodal scheduling systems and collaborative resource-sharing models.
The presentation highlighted the project’s three large-scale pilots, focused respectively on multimodal logistics interoperability, zero-emission inland waterway and cargo bike logistics, and shared logistics resources for temperature-controlled and agri-food supply chains. The consortium also presented the project’s broader Physical Internet Operational Efficiency Evaluation activities, designed to assess the scalability of these solutions across wider European logistics networks.
Co-funded by the European Union under Horizon Europe and by the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI), HOLOGISTICS is coordinated by University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and brings together 25 organisations from 14 European countries.
Cross-project collaboration within the Physical Internet neighbourhood
Alongside HOLOGISTICS, the workshop featured presentations from several complementary European initiatives working on sustainable freight transport and logistics innovation.
IKIGAI
IKIGAI presented its work on accelerating the adoption of Physical Internet principles through collaborative, interoperable and zero-emission logistics solutions. The project focuses on innovations such as shared logistics platforms for SMEs, synchromodal logistics hubs, reusable modular containers and collaborative resource-sharing mechanisms.
BRIDGE
BRIDGE introduced its activities dedicated to improving interoperability and seamless data exchange across rail, road and maritime freight transport. The project aims to support the digitalisation of European intermodal logistics systems through harmonised data-sharing ecosystems and standardised workflows.
SARIL
SARIL presented its work on resilience and sustainability in transport and logistics infrastructures. The project develops tools and methodologies to support decision-making during disruptions such as floods, wildfires, pandemics and cyber-attacks, while promoting greener and more resilient logistics operations.
PILOTS
PILOTS also participated in the workshop, contributing to the exchange on Physical Internet and logistics innovation solutions that will be showcased within the ALICE Logistics Innovation Village during TRA 2026.
The workshop represented an important step toward building stronger synergies between projects addressing complementary challenges in European freight transport. By sharing knowledge, aligning communication strategies and fostering collaboration, the participating initiatives aim to offer visitors at TRA 2026 a more connected and comprehensive vision of the future of sustainable logistics in Europe.
