HOLOGISTICS at European Researchers' Night 2026: Showcasing Sustainable Freight Transport in Reggio Emilia with Università degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia (UNIMORE)

How can cutting-edge digital innovation, artificial intelligence, and physical solutions transform European logistics into a decarbonized, flexible, and highly efficient network?

On Friday, September 25, 2026, project coordinator Università degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia (UNIMORE) will bring the future of European supply chains to the public during the European Researchers’ Night in Reggio Emilia (Tecnopolo – Reggiane Parco Innovazione).

One Stand, One Mission: Next-Generation European Mobility & Logistics

To tackle the complex decarbonization challenges facing the transport sector, collaboration across Europe is essential. Visitors will find HOLOGISTICS at a dedicated exhibition stand focused on Smart Transport & European Logistics, showcasing a powerful synergy alongside four complementary Horizon Europe research projects:

  • HOLOGISTICS: Accelerating zero-emission freight transport and sustainable European logistics through 12 physical and digital interoperable solutions.
  • AUTOMOTIF: Automating multimodal freight transport and supply chain integration across Europe.
  • PROSPECTS 5.0: Guiding European industrial manufacturing toward a sustainable, resilient, and human-centric Industry 5.0 framework.
  • SENSEI: Enhancing human-technology interaction for safer, more transparent, and inclusive automated mobility.
  • Roads4all: Transforming road safety culture across European transport networks to achieve “Vision Zero”.

Together, these initiatives highlight how scientific research is actively modernizing European transport and logistics ecosystems.

Redefining Freight Transport Across European Supply Chains

As trade grows across the continent, European logistics faces a critical challenge: meeting rising delivery demands while drastically cutting transport emissions. Funded under the Horizon Europe program, HOLOGISTICS addresses this by driving the transition toward the Physical Internet (PI)—a fully interconnected global freight ecosystem where goods move seamlessly across vehicles, vessels, nodes, and platforms.

To build this open and scalable ecosystem, HOLOGISTICS is developing and validating 12 integrated physical and digital innovations for freight transport:

  • Smart Modular Containers & Packaging: Sensor-equipped transport units that optimize space and enable real-time asset tracking.
  • Zero-Emission Fleet Integration: Clean vehicle technology and smart charging strategies for last-mile and regional freight transport.
  • AI-Driven Synchromodal Routing Platforms: Intelligent decision-support engines that dynamically optimize freight routes across road, rail, and water based on real-time cost, speed, and carbon footprint.

From Lab to Road: Testing Solutions Across 3 European Logistics Pilots

Research creates real-world impact when tested in actual transport networks. During the event, UNIMORE researchers will demonstrate how these 12 solutions are being deployed across three large-scale pilot projects in Europe—proving how data-driven innovations reduce carbon emissions, cut transit times, and boost efficiency across multimodal logistics corridors.

Visitors will have the opportunity to meet the team, interact with live demonstrations, and explore how academic research directly fuels the green transition of European freight transport.
