Bridging Digital and Physical Internet for LTL-on-Rail Freight: A New Article Released by the HOLOGISTICS Project
The EU-funded HOLOGISTICS project is pleased to announce the release of a new feature article on its Educational Portal, authored by Dr. Hans-Jürgen Weidemann (CargoBeamer AG), a key partner in the HOLOGISTICS consortium.
The new article, titled “From Digital to Physical Internet: Making LTL-on-Rail Work with CBoXX, Automated PI Nodes, and Slot-Based Booking,” highlights how the HOLOGISTICS framework is driving system-level innovation to decarbonise European freight transport and make rail a viable choice for Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) shipments.
Driving Freight Decarbonisation Through HOLOGISTICS Innovation
While rail freight is crucial for achieving Europe’s climate and sustainability targets, everyday unit cargo—such as Euro pallets, cage boxes, and mixed parcels—remains predominantly on the road. Traditional rail infrastructure and terminal interfaces were never designed to handle small, fragmented, and time-sensitive LTL shipments.
To solve this challenge, the HOLOGISTICS project adopts a Physical Internet (PI) approach, treating physical shipments like data packets in a digital network. The article details three interconnected innovations developed within HOLOGISTICS to bridge this gap:
- CBoXX Technology: Standardized, modular load carriers designed within HOLOGISTICS to simplify LTL cargo consolidation and handling.
- Automated PI Nodes & GateModules: Automated terminal interface modules engineered by the project to minimize dwell times and streamline transfer processes.
- Slot-Based Dynamic Booking: A digital orchestration layer enabling flexible, transparent, and predictable rail capacity booking.
Real-World Validation: The HOLOGISTICS Corridor Pilot
The HOLOGISTICS initiative is moving these concepts from research to industrial reality. The solutions presented in the article will undergo real-world validation in mid-2027 during the HOLOGISTICS corridor pilot on the strategic Kaldenkirchen (DE) ↔ Domodossola (IT) route.
By integrating physical modularity with digital synchronization, HOLOGISTICS aims to demonstrate how system-level thinking can unlock competitive, zero-emission multimodal supply chains across Europe.
